Great post, thank you! I've also found colostrum powder to be helpful.

Would also love a post on antibiotic overuse, in particular how the evidence doesn't support them for things like strep throat, bacterial sinus infection and diarrhea in most otherwise healthy people. Those are just some examples I know of but I know there are many others. Easier to not take antibiotics than recover from them.

Thanks so much for your comment and mention of colostrum – there are indeed a few promising studies on colostrum and serum-derived bovine immunoglobulins as it relates to gastroenteritis; I’ve added it to the guide :D

And yes, antibiotic overuse is a huge issue, especially for mostly viral or self-limiting infections. I’ll add a piece on that to my content ideas list—thanks for the suggestion!

Last time I had a colonoscopy I got a post infectious IBS. I think this protocol may help with my next colonoscopy.

This protocol does seem like a great way to support gut healing before and after! Maybe incorporating S. boulardii and butyrate ahead of time could help with microbial balance and gut barrier integrity. Hope your next experience goes much smoother!

This is such a comprehensive and evidence-based guide, thank you for putting this together! It's amazing how much gut health impacts overall recovery, and I appreciate the breakdown of different recovery phases. The discussion on butyrate, colostrum, and SBI is particularly interesting since these aren't always talked about in mainstream discussions on gastro recovery. Definitely bookmarking this for future reference! Thank you for sharing.

Wonderful information Lucy. Thank you. I don't know if you have any insight into my reaction to taking Butyrate as a supplement orally. I've been taking Biotic's brand butyrate, 1 capsule twice per day because I know my butyrate levels have been typically low when I've done a CDSA. But the butyrate within a few days of taking it causes foul gas. This has occurred many times when I've attempted to supplement with butyrate.

Hi Larry - Biotics Research brand contains Vitamin A, guar gum, and arabic gum -- is it possible those might be the culprit there? I'd try one of the two brands listed in this article if you haven't already. It could also be hydrogen sulfide overgrowth and the butyrate is shifting the balance of things, but it's hard to know without the rest of the clinical picture.

Thanks Lucy. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. I'm sure you are very busy. I will check out the two brands you listed. I know Chris Kresser is discussing Trybutyrin-Corebiome in his Adapt products.

What kind of zinc ? I keep hearing about zinc Carnosine. What brands do you recommend ?

Great question - most of the studies used a generic zinc acetate or sulfate, but I'd recommend zinc carnosine for mucosal healing or zinc picolinate for raising overall zinc levels. Pure Encapsulations is a good brand for both.
